House Theatre Company Foster's Diner ia a New Mexico rest stop that lost most of its clientele when a new highway bypass opened. When Teddy, a Vietnam vet teetering on the edge of madness and his young girlfriend barge in, nothing will ever be the same for its occupants. With black sardonic wit and the constant threat of violence, Teddy slowly begins to strip each character's pretensions and exposes their innermost secrets and fears. For everyone in the diner a searing moment of truth has been faced, and it has changed them more than they have the desire, or courage, to admit. Much more than a crime story, When You Comin' Back Red Ryder? is a story of conflicting ideals, clashing personalities, and inner demons. Winner of the Village Voice's Obie Award for Distinguished Play. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Rubbers The setting is the Assembly Chamber of a state Legislature, where a determinedly liberal and unpopular lady legislator presses for passage of a bill requiring druggists to place contraceptive devices in plain view with prices clearly marked. Her shocked colleagues, a motley, self-serving crew of political hacks, react with platitudes and inane counter-proposals, mostly motivated by fear of their constituents' displeasure. As they bicker hilariously among themselves, deliver fatuous speeches, and play to the visitors gallery, the playwright fixes them all with a deliciously wicked eye - and out, of the farcical doings, raises some very funny questions about the suitability and purposefulness of our elected representatives. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Full
Gallop A play based on the life of Diana Vreeland, who stood at the center of American style for five decades. As editor of Harper's Bazaar and Vogue magazines, and as a member of the International Cafe Society, she chronicled the extraordinary people and events of her time. Full Gallop is a portrait of this remarkable woman at a turning point in her life. Vreeland has just returned home to New York after four months in Europe-a trip she took after being fired from Vogue magazine. She throws an impromptu dinner party in the hope that a wealthy friend who is invited will bankroll her in starting a magazine of her own. Other friends, however, attempt to persuade her to take a job at the famed Metropolitan Museum of Art. In her distinctive style, once she decides in which direction her life will move, she goes at it "full gallop." ~~~~!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ All performances begin at 8:00 pm EXCEPT for ALL SUNDAY PERFORMANCES, which are matinees and begin at 3:00 pm.
