In 1973, advertising executive David McCall noticed that his son knew all of the lyrics to all of the Beatles’ songs but couldn’t seem to memorize the multiplication table. With the help of Tom Yohe, George Newall and jazz pianist Bob Dorough, McCall created a musical animation “Three is a Magic Number” and sold the concept to Michael Eisner who, at the time, was in charge of children’s programming at ABC-TV. “Schoolhouse Rock” ultimately became an Emmy award-winning series of educational animated song spots, which ran during Saturday morning cartoon shows. They focused on grammar, math, science and history.
